Dye sublimation onto aluminum mural

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) Hall at Carnegie Mellon University is now featuring “Good Thoughts, Good Words, Good Deeds.” a new 44-ft long, 8-ft tall mural by artist Stephanie Dinkins.

The mural was featured at TCS Hall’s dedication on April 21st 2022, located on Forbes Avenue on Carnegie Mellon's Oakland campus. It is the latest public art piece on campus, a series of large-scale prints on metal panels that show a set of interconnected Venn diagrams. The overall 9x44' image is made up of (11) individual 48x96” dye sublimated metal panels, each on the clear gloss finish, lending dimension and reflectivity to the overall mural.

The Venn diagrams signify the complexity of our relation to the systems that influence our lives and other beings - human, non-human and machine. The semi-reflective surface of the mural allows passersby to see themselves, and serves as a reminder to always consider the common good when creating systems and technology.

“The project seeks to be a daily reminder that people creating the technological ecosystems underpinning the systems people rely on have a responsibility to imagine and create automated systems that value, honor, support and sustain the common good. Care is the infrastructure that binds us. Those engaging the theory, design, development and application of computational methods must remember that we are all connected and emphasize care and equity within code.”

About Stephanie Dinkins

Stephanie Dinkins is a transmedia artist who creates experiences that spark dialog about race, gender, aging, and our future histories. Her work in AI and other mediums uses emerging technologies and social collaboration to work toward technological ecosystems based on care and social equity. Dinkins' experiences with and explorations of artificial intelligence have led to a deep interest in how algorithmic systems impact communities of color in particular and all of our futures more generally.
Dinkins' experiments with AI have led full circle to recognize the stories, myths, and cultural perspectives, aka data, that we hold and share form and inform society and have done so for millennia. She has concluded that our stories are our algorithms. We must value, grow, respect, and collaborate with each other's stories (data) to build care and broadly compassionate values into the technological ecosystems that increasingly support our future. Dinkins teaches at Stony Brook University where she holds the Kusama Endowed Chair in Art.

About CARNEGIE MELLON’S TCS hALL

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) Hall is a 90,000 square-foot building that was made possible with a $35 million gift from Tata Consultancy Services. The five-story structure is a hub of Carnegie Mellon’s academic partnership with TCS.

The building also houses the School of Computer Science’s Institute for Software Research, the Master of Science in Computational Finance program and the Center for Business Engagement. The top floor is the home for TCS’s Pace Port, a research and co-innovation center for companies across a range of industries and where TCS and Carnegie Mellon researchers will partner on next-generation technologies.

TCS Hall has achieved LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council for its energy efficiency and sustainability, in line with CMU’s mission to have a transformative impact on society through continual innovation in education, research, creativity, and entrepreneurship.
