This summer, Selby Gardens is excited to present an indoor and outdoor exhibition featuring the work of legendary American photographer Lynn Goldsmith, renowned for both her celebrity portraits and fine-art images. Goldsmith’s exhibition at the Downtown Sarasota campus will combine stunning images of flowers with intimate portraits of Selby Gardens’ artist in residence – Patti Smith.

 Over the past 50 years, Goldsmith’s photography has appeared on or between the covers of magazines including LifeNewsweekTimeVanity FairRolling Stone, Sports Illustrated, and many others. Her work is held in numerous private art collections and museums, including the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Seventeen books have been produced of Goldsmith’s images, including Flower by Rizzoli in 2000 and Patti Smith: Before Easter After, published as a Deluxe Limited Edition by Taschen in 2019 and as a trade edition by Rizzoli in 2024.

Lynn Goldsmith

Lynn Goldsmith is an award-winning photographer, filmmaker, artist, and author whose career spans more than 50 years. Her work has appeared in major publications including Life, Time, Vanity Fair, Rolling Stone, Newsweek, Sports Illustrated, and The New Yorker, and is held in collections such as the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, The Museum of Modern Art, The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and The Polaroid Collection.

Known for her iconic portraits of musicians, actors, athletes, authors, and cultural figures, Goldsmith has published 17 books, including New Kids, a New York Times bestseller, and Patti Smith: Before Easter After, released by Rizzoli in 2024. Her work has earned numerous honors, including Lucien Clergue, World Press, and Lucie awards for portraiture.

Beyond photography, Goldsmith has been a pioneering creative force in music, film, television, and visual media. She was the youngest woman accepted into the Directors Guild of America, directed early rock television programming, managed Grand Funk Railroad, founded one of the first celebrity-focused photo agencies, and created music and video work under the name Will Powers.

In 2023, Goldsmith won a landmark Supreme Court copyright case involving her portrait of Prince, a decision widely recognized as a major victory for artists’ rights. Throughout her career, she has remained committed to exploring identity, beauty, fame, creativity, and the human spirit.
