The King of the Animal Kingdom

About

Randal Ford

Typically when you think of a portrait photographer you think the subjects to be people, but not in Randal Ford’s case. Ford’s portrait subjects are animals. Ford specializes in photographing the vast spectrum of the animal kingdom. Ranging from various mammals, avians, primates, reptiles, from as small as a squirrel to as large as an elephant. Often utilizing a neutral background, Ford aims to showcase the spirit of the individual animal in order for the viewer to build a personal connection.

Currently based in Austin, TX, Randal Ford has been published in magazines such as Time Magazine, Texas Monthly, and Communication Arts. He won 1st place and best of show in the International Photo Awards Fine Art competition. In 2018 Ford published his first animal portrait series, The Animal Kingdom: A Collection of Portraits, and his second book in 2020, Good Dog: A Collection of Portraits. Ford also works with multiple animal conservation and preservation charities such as Project Survival’s Cat Haven, Emancipet, and Austin Zoo.

By photographing each subject in studio on a neutral background, I am creating a portrait that is focused on the animal only. This deconstructive approach to portraiture allows you to experience the creature in a way otherwise not possible. Through this language of simplistic portraiture, these photographs are aimed to elicit an emotion in you. Whether it’s beauty, power, or humor, I want to give animals the opportunity to tell their story and to connect with you
