Cold Warriors: Photographs By Tom Sliter

Produced On Dye sublimation onto aluminum

Multiple Exposures Gallery is pleased to announce a new photography exhibition by Tom Sliter.

Cold Warriors is a series of images that look at the aircraft that defined the Cold War differently. Rather than focusing on the aircraft’s characteristics, the exhibit delves into the underlying design elements—the grand sweeps, smooth lines, sharp angles, and graceful curves that are a hallmark of pushing boundaries—higher, faster, farther.

But this inherent beauty is intertwined with the complicated, darker story of the forces that drove these designs. Unlike most aviation photography, the partial, cropped views and the black-and-white presentation encourage the viewer to engage on a deeper level – to acknowledge the aircraft’s grave purpose and appreciate its inherent beauty.

Tom Sliter is a fine art photographer in Washington, DC, who has long been fascinated by aviation. His photography has received national and international recognition. He is a juried Torpedo Factory Artist Association member and has been a member of MEG since 2018.

About Tom SLiter

I began moving my photography from hobby to fine art about four years ago. Among my earliest inspirations were the works of Ansel Adams and the Westons for their mastery of composition and the subtleties of grayscale, and Margaret Bourke-White for the boldness and beauty with which she portrayed the world of steel and concrete.

I have always been captivated by the power of a black and white print to isolate the essence of light and shadow, lines and textures while evoking deeper emotions. One of my current projects is examining the interaction of light with the surface of metallic objects. The images reveal an inherent beauty and depth that attracts the eye and entices it to linger a little longer. I am also a keen sailor interested in marine and aviation photography.

I do most of my work using Nikon and Olympus digital cameras and an iPhone; Lightroom, Photoshop, and Nik software for most post-processing; and an Epson 3880 printer and Canson, Moab, and Red River papers for printing.
